Why Diwali Corporate Gifting Starts Earlier Than You Think

Diwali Corporate Gifting is rarely just about choosing a gift. It is about finding the right gift, getting it customised, managing quantities, packaging everything beautifully and ensuring it reaches the right people on time. And all of that takes longer than you might expect.

Every year, Diwali seems to arrive suddenly. One minute teams are discussing budgets and recipients, and the next, there is a long list of clients to gift, employee addresses to collect, boxes to customise and deadlines to meet.

For businesses looking to move away from last-minute, generic gifting, starting early can make all the difference. Here is why:

1. The best gifts aren't always available at scale

There is a big difference between buying 20 gifts and sourcing 500 or 2000. If you are looking for handcrafted products, small-batch food brands, artisan-made products or gifts from purpose-led businesses, availability can be limited. Many of these enterprises work with smaller production capacities and need time to fulfil larger corporate orders.

Starting early gives you access to better products and more thoughtful choices, rather than simply choosing from whatever happens to be available at the last minute.

2. Thoughtful curation takes time

A corporate Diwali gift needs to strike a delicate balance. It should feel generous without being excessive, premium without being impersonal, and useful without becoming predictable.

Then there are practical considerations: dietary preferences, budgets, recipient profiles, brand guidelines and the overall experience you want the gift to create.

The earlier you begin, the more time you have to consider these details instead of making decisions under pressure.

A useful starting point is to ask:

  • Who are you gifting: employees, clients, partners or all three?

  • What does your budget look like per recipient?

  • Do you want one gift for everyone or different tiers?

  • Does the gift need to be branded?

  • Are you looking for handcrafted, sustainable or purpose-led products?

  • How many recipients are you expecting?

Having these answers early makes the curation process significantly easier.

3. Customisation needs breathing room

Personalised gifting can transform a corporate gift from something branded to something genuinely considered.

This could mean adding a company message, custom tags, personalised notes, branded elements or creating a completely bespoke hamper around your brand identity. Customisation involves more than adding a logo. Products may need to be sourced, packaging designed, samples approved and quantities confirmed before production can begin.

If personalisation is important to your Diwali gifting, it should be one of the first things you discuss, not the last.

4. Sustainable gifting requires more planning

Choosing a more responsible gift often means looking beyond the product itself. How is it packaged? Can the packaging be reused? Are materials recycled or upcycled? Who made the products? Can the supplier fulfil the quantity you need without compromising the quality or values behind the product? These are questions worth asking before placing an order.

At Boxes of Goodness, for instance, we work with artisans, social enterprises, women-led businesses and other purpose-led enterprises, and many of the products we curate are produced in smaller batches. Planning ahead allows us to build a gift around the story and impact behind the products, rather than simply filling a box with whatever is available.

We Don't Always See the Waste Behind Festive Gifting

We don't know exactly how much of India's festive waste comes from corporate gifting. But we do know that gifting is part of a much larger consumption and packaging surge, and when businesses are sending hundreds or thousands of gifts, the choices they make about packaging matter.

India generated more than 4.1 million tonnes of plastic waste in 2022–23, according to data from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. This is national plastic-waste data and cannot be attributed specifically to gifting, but it gives some context for the scale of the wider waste challenge. The festive season adds another layer to this.

In Delhi, municipal authorities collected more than 14,000 tonnes of waste per day on each of the two days immediately before Diwali in 2025, compared with a usual daily collection of around 11,500 tonnes. Officials identified gifts, packaging, decorations and festive gatherings among the contributors to the increase.

Mumbai saw a similar festive spike, with around 3,000 tonnes of additional garbage generated during Diwali week in 2025.

These figures aren't a measure of corporate gifting waste alone, and it would be misleading to present them that way. But they highlight an important question for businesses sending hundreds or thousands of gifts each festive season:

What happens to everything that comes with the gift once the gift has been opened?

A beautifully presented gift doesn't have to mean layers of wrapping paper, plastic, ribbons and packaging that are discarded within minutes. Reusable baskets, fabric packaging, recycled materials and boxes designed for a second use can create an equally considered experience while reducing what is left behind. At scale, these choices matter.

5. Diwali logistics are a project of their own

The gift is only one part of corporate Diwali gifting. Once the boxes are ready, they still need to be packed, labelled and dispatched - often to hundreds of recipients across multiple cities and states.

For large corporate orders, this can involve:

Recipient data → Address verification → Production → Packaging → Quality checks → Dispatch → Delivery

And during the festive season, delivery networks are understandably busier than usual.

Starting early gives you a buffer for address changes, production delays, transit issues and all the small things that inevitably arise when you're sending gifts at scale.

So, When Should You Start?

There is no single deadline that works for every company, but 8–12 weeks before Diwali is a sensible starting point for larger or customised corporate gifting programmes.

A simple planning timeline could look like this:

Timeline

Tasks

8–12 weeks before

Set budget, recipient numbers and gifting objectives

6–8 weeks before

Explore gifting options and shortlist suppliers

5–7 weeks before

Finalise products, quantities and customisation

3–5 weeks before

Approve samples, packaging and artwork

2–3 weeks before

Finalise recipient data and begin packing

1–2 weeks before

Dispatch and track deliveries

For smaller, off-the-shelf orders, you may not need quite as much lead time. But if your gifting involves customisation, handcrafted products, large quantities or nationwide delivery, earlier is almost always better.

The real advantage of starting early

Starting your Diwali gifting process early isn't simply about avoiding a last-minute scramble. It gives you something much more valuable: choice.

Choice in what you give. Choice in who you support. Choice in how the gift is presented. And time to create an experience that feels considered rather than obligatory.

Remember: just because corporate gifting may happen every year, doesn't mean it has to feel routine.

This Diwali, start before the festive rush overwhelms you, and give yourself the time to gift with intention.
